Original IND Signs

The following pictured signs are from the Independent Subway (IND) R1 through R9-class subway cars. These cars were built in many series by either Pressed Steel Car Company, American Car & Foundry, or Pullman Standard between 1931 and 1940. Over 1700 cars were built. The last of them were retired in the early 1970s.

These cars had two different sets of signs. Two signs - a route and destination - resided above the doors on each end of the car. The other set is a set of three signs - two destinations and one route - one set in each side of the car. In the photo, the sign on the left (reading QB) is the route sign, and the sign on the right (reading CONEY ISLAND) is the destination sign. Each car had two sets of each sign.
